Infectious Diseases and Travel Clinic

The Infectious Diseases and Travel Clinic sees patients with a variety of infections, in addition to providing vaccinations for foreign travel. Our Infectious Diseases Team treats the entire spectrum of infections in adults, including MRSA infections, meningitis, encephalitis, head and neck infections, osteomyelitis as well as other bone and joint infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, herpes, tick-borne illnesses, tropical diseases such as malaria, and others. Our Infectious Disease team routinely manages patients who require outpatient intravenous antibiotic therapy. Our Travel Clinic offers a wide variety of vaccinations and travel related counseling for persons planning foreign travel.

Our team of three providers includes:
Dr. Paul Kamitsuka, a former faculty member at Harvard Medical School with 27 years of experience as a practicing physician, and 20 years of experience as an infectious disease specialist. He has a degree in tropical medicine in addition to his medical degree. He is listed among the top infectious disease specialists in North Carolina, and among the top physicians nationally.
Dr. Richard Trotta, the former Assistant Chief of Infectious Diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is a retired colonel with the U.S. Army, and was our chief medical officer in Afghanistan. Dr. Trotta brings a wealth of experience in infectious diseases acquired both in the U.S. and abroad.
Betsy Summey, a Family Nurse Practioner, with 40 years of experience in healthcare, first as a nurse and subsequently as a nurse practitioner. She has worked in family practice as well as in public health, having been at the New Hanover Health Department prior to joining us.

Both physicians are board certified both in internal medicine as well as in infectious diseases. Our team collaborates with primary care and other specialty physicians in making sure that patients receive the highest level of care.
